Executive Director Job Description

Executive Director – Juneau Youth Services

Passionate People Making a Difference for Young Alaskans

Children.     Families.     Community.

Juneau Youth Services has initiated a national search to identify and recruit top-notch candidates to compete to become its next Executive Director.  Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director will lead the development and growth of this well-established community behavioral health organization to make unique contributions that improve the behavioral health and well-being of Juneau – its children, families and community.

Home-based in Juneau, Alaska, Juneau Youth Services is a $9M+ private, not-for-profit behavioral health and human service organization that provides a continuum of emergency, residential, school and community-based services and supports for young people with mental and behavioral disorders and their families (http://www.jys.org).  For over 55 years, JYS has been a leader in responding to the behavioral health needs of Alaskan youth and their families. From homelessness to mental health issues to chemical dependencies, they understand the unique circumstances faced by children and their families.   Committed to excellence, JYS is accredited by the Council on Accreditation.

As Executive Director, you will be the chief professional officer of JYS and will be responsible for the organization’s performance - programmatic, administrative and financial.  Key leadership roles will include working with the Board to develop and implement JYS’ strategic vision; stimulating the development of state-of-the-art programming strategies that position JYS as a regional and statewide leader for achieving community impact; guiding and coaching the executive leadership team; and, with the Board and leadership team, setting and achieving programmatic and financial goals that assure a stable future.   As the highly visible primary spokesperson for JYS, you will communicate JYS’ plans and policies to broad audiences and develop and nurture productive relationships and resources deemed essential for the attainment of JYS’ goals and objectives.

JYS is facing a number of challenges, each of which is critical to the Center’s future and all of which require exceptional leadership and teamwork:

  • Executive leadership transition
  • Transformation of services and supports consistent with community/regional needs

and the re-design of Alaska’s Strategic and Medicaid Plans

  • Realignment, recruitment, training & retention of Staff
  • Full implementation of their new EHR
  • Financial turnaround and stabilization to assure future viability of the organization
  • Re-accreditation of services and programs by the Council on Accreditation

This is a unique opportunity to shape the future of JYS and to impact behavioral health and support services for youth and their families across the state and region.

Juneau, Alaska’s state capital, is located in the southeastern panhandle of Alaska, in a splendid setting between the alpine peaks of the Tongass National Forest and the Pacific waters of the Inside Passage.  A sophisticated city of 32,000, with a full range of urban services and amenities, Juneau is the largest American city, and the nation’s only state capital, that is not on the continental road system.  Uniquely, the city is accessible only by air and water.

As an ‘isolated’ city, Juneau has a robust a ‘can-do’ attitude and residents brimming with energy and imagination.   The city is an arts mecca and is rich with non-profit organizations.  Because Juneauites can’t just drive to a nearby city for services, culture and shopping, these activities thrive locally, drawing residents from around the region.

A vibrant and diverse regional economy; solid educational opportunities from pre-K though college at the University of Alaska – Southeast; a sophisticated medical community anchored by Bartlett Regional Hospital, Southeast Alaska Regional Health Consortium and over 200 physicians; abundant recreational opportunities in the pristine mountains and waters that surround the city; and engaging neighbors all combine to make Juneau a terrific community to call home.

Our ideal candidate is a results-driven leader and entrepreneur with experience engaging broad stakeholder groups – board, staff, consumers, families and communities - to shape a future of innovation and risk-taking without moving away from what JYS does best.  With philosophies of shared leadership and collaboration, candidates will be politically savvy and excellent communicators.  Candidates must have successful track records leading strategic initiatives and building innovative systems of care in collaboration with professional and community partners.  Our ideal candidates will have a strong business sense within the community health and human services context – able to balance clinical and financial goals & be facile with the personal business approach that is a part of Alaska.

Candidates must have a combination of education and progressive management and leadership experience in complex, non-profit community behavioral healthcare, health or human service provider organizations. Demonstrated administrative and business expertise is required. Residential provider experience is preferred, but not required.
