Heart Failure And Ventricular Assist Device Nurse Practitioner/Physician Assistant - Hospital Based Job Description

Position Summary
Heart Failure (HF) and Ventricular Assist Device (VAD) practitioner at the GW Hospital and MFA. The practitioner will be the central point of contact for the in-patient advanced heart failure program and will work closely with physicians, surgeons, PAs, NPs, RNs and other allied health personnel. This position offers an exciting opportunity to be an integral part of program building and take a leadership role in an academic setting.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Other duties may be assigned.

Patient Care:
Will evaluate and manage patients with decompensated heart failure
Will provide consultative heart failure care to patients on medical and surgical services
Will evaluate pre-implant and educate patient and family pre-and post implant through discharge.
Will coordinate inpatient care including intra-operative discharge management and participate in post-operative preparation for discharge.
Will provide in-patient and long term outpatient care post VAD implantation.
Will collaborate with other advanced practitioners and referring physicians to arrange for clinical care for advanced heart failure and VAD patients.
Will implement standardized interventions to meet patient needs and consult physicians as needed.
Will share responsibility for off hours coverage to the VAD/advanced heart failure service to handle patient phone calls, questions and troubleshooting. Call coverage will be shared with other personnel.

Maintain up-to-date knowledge on advanced heart failure care and VAD technology. Be able to attend national meetings to learn and implement VAD/advanced heart failure related skills.
Provide training and be resource for support staff including nurses and other medical personnel for advanced heart failure management including hemodynamics, inotropes and evolving therapies
Provide training and be resource for support staff including, nurses, and ancillary personnel, operating room staff on VAD and related technology and patient management.

Promote GWU Advanced Heart Failure and Mechanical Support Program within the hospital and among network physicians, to increase referrals. This may involve outreach meetings, travel, community events, and developing and maintaining relationship with community physicians and providers.
Coordinate with hospital personnel for INTERMACS database.
Primary role in protocol development, internal and external program reviews, maintaining program policies, protocols, guidelines and research projects. Will take the lead in JACHO certification and maintenance and addressing other regulatory requirements pertaining to achieving center for excellence status.
Candidate, initially, will also share responsibility with RN VAD/HF coordinator for keeping inventory of the supplies related to MCS and accessories. Eventually, this responsibility will be shifted to a dedicated person.

Heart Failure And Ventricular Assist Device Nurse Practitioner/Physician Assistant - Hospital Based Job Requirements

The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

Education Graduate of an approved Acute Care Nurse Practitioner Program with Master of Science in Nursing with board certification in adult specialty and maintain current Washington DC NP licensure.

Experience Basic Life support and advanced cardiac life support on hire or within one month of hiring. Demonstrate leadership ability. Flexible and able to adjust schedule to meet patient/staff needs. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. The successful candidate will have at least three (3) years clinical experience as an RN/NP gained in a cardiology, CT surgery, CCU/ICU, advanced heart failure or acute care environment. Previous VAD experience highly desirable but not essential.

Competencies Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills. Must be able to communicate providing verbal feedback in a professional manner. Must be able to follow and understand instructions, and react favorably in all work situations. Must have strong interpersonal skills and be mentally adaptable and flexible in dealing with a variety of people at various levels within and outside the Medical Faculty Associates (MFA). Must be able to do math calculations and input data into the computer.

Supervision Received
Candidate will report to the Medical Director of the program for clinical activites.
